Signature Q3 2008 - (Page 8) In the News | Q3 ’08 Great Moments in Wireless History Global Communications Launched In 1945 a young Royal Air Force Bluesightings … Have You Seen Blue Lately? From literature and TV to cyberspace radar technician circulated a memo outlining a novel proposal: What if you put a satellite 22,000 miles in space, a height where its orbit would cause it to remain over the same location on the surface of the Earth? And what if you used such a satellite to transmit communications signals? Shortly thereafter, this idea was published in a magazine called Wireless World – which nearly rejected it as too far-fetched. But that imaginative young man had created the concept of geosynchronous satellites that today girdle the globe as the backbone of communications around the world. They circle the Earth in Clarke orbits, named after the man who conceived them: Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008), the writer and undersea explorer best known for the book and movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. (Clarke also famously noted that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”) and newsrooms, we’re seeing blue here, there and everywhere. Cultural Crossroads I Arthur C. Clarke envisioned the global network of communications satellites. Market Watch Wireless Car, Low Energy IMS Research announced two new reports, both available at a 20 percent discount to Promoter and Associate members of the Bluetooth SIG. The Wireless Car concludes the potential for automotive use cases is expected to increase significantly during the next decade. The report covers hands-free calling, audio streaming, in-car Internet, video streaming/networking, tire pressure monitoring, wireless sensors, onboard diagnostics, car-to-car and car-tobuilding communication, toll payment and more. IMS Research also focuses on the development of and future market for upcoming low energy applications in its new report, The Worldwide Market for Bluetooth Low Energy Technology. Applications that are expected to benefit from this Bluetooth technology include watches, medical applications, sports performance devices and office/ mobile equipment. IMS considers factors that will influence the adoption of Bluetooth low energy technology, the targeted applications for both single-mode and dual-mode ICs and the sectors that will represent the largest Bluetooth low energy technology markets. A German developer has come up with a Bluetooth enabled burka for Muslim women who wish to both honor their faith’s tradition and use technology to send pictures of themselves to friends and family. Cultural Crossroads II In Saudi Arabia, Bluetooth technology is becoming a popular way to finesse strictly defined courtship conventions. Young people are checking each other out and then signaling interest via their Bluetooth enabled cell phones; if the recipient accepts, phone numbers are wirelessly exchanged. I’d Like to Thank … Motorola, for giving all nominees of the 2007 Academy Awards, held this past February, a ROKR E8 and S-9 Bluetooth wireless stereo headset. You’ll be spotting Bluetooth wireless devices on TV, in movies, online – everywhere. Send us your favorite Bluesightings at signature@bluetooth.com. What’s the Word? | Where do you think Bluetooth technology will be in the next 10 years? “It’s still improving in terms of low power and also high speed. I think that the first step that has been done – saying that there will be 10X and 100X [speeds] – might lead into a final one that might be 1000X. Why not?” Jean-Phillipe Lambert, System Architect Wipro Ltd., Sophia Antipolis, France “For new market opportunity, I think low power will be very attractive to the consumer for health care and also the medical devices. I think they will be the two key areas for the market. It can really tie into the life of everyone.” Eric Wang, BQE of BQTF HYPER Taiwan Technology Inc., Ltd., Taipei, Taiwan “Interoperability is one of the big ones, [and] the user experience. Bluetooth technology has made some substantial penetration. Keep the user experience and expectations at the high level and watch it explode.” Armando Mendoza, Staff Engineer SiRF Technology, Inc., Phoenix, Ariz. 8 | SIGnature | Bluetooth.org http://bluetooth.org
