Bluetooth stack Bluetooth / Wibree stack (dual-mode) Wibree stack (standalone) Wibree is an ultra low power radio technology developed by Nokia for use in small devices, such as watches, gaming and sports sensors, that connect to host devices like personal computers and mobile phones. Wibree is optimized for embedded applications that require extremely low power consumption, small size and low cost, rather than high-data-rate voice and audio applications. Our expertise, large membership and resources like the qualification program will help ensure interoperability and further development of Wibree. How will this integration benefit Bluetooth technology? Wibree technology Bluetooth Profiles Bluetooth Profiles L2CAP Wibree Profiles PAL Wibree Profiles L2CAP PAL Admission Control HCI HCI + Extension HIF Wibree technology addresses devices not currently served effectively by Bluetooth wireless technology: smaller devices with ultra low power requirements. An ultra low power Bluetooth wireless solution will enhance current use cases and enable new ones, providing greater access to untapped markets such as sports and wellness, health care, entertainment devices and toys. Wibree is a good fit for Bluetooth technology because it tightly complements existing solutions and market sectors. With Wibree on the ultra low power end and UWB on the high-speed side, Bluetooth technology provides the full circle of wireless options, positioning it to become the default technology for connecting all sorts of devices with varying power needs. How is Wibree implemented with Bluetooth technology? LM DuMo Manager Link Manager (LM) Link Coordinator (LC) RF LL Link Layer (LL) LC RF Wibree was designed for implementation either as a standalone chip or as a dual-mode chip incorporating Wibree and Bluetooth technologies. Small devices like watches and sports sensors will be based on the standalone chip, whereas Bluetooth enabled devices like mobile phones and PCs will benefit from the dualmode chip, which will extend Bluetooth enabled device connectivity to a range of smaller devices. Wibree’s power consumption in dual mode is ultimately dependent upon how a product uses Bluetooth technology. Dual-mode implementation uses parts of the Bluetooth wireless hardware and shares one physical radio and antenna. When will the ultra low power Bluetooth wireless technology interoperability specification be ready, and when will the first products arrive on the market? Physical Layer (PHY) Wibree Technology Protocol Stack Why Wibree? Since its announcement in October 2006, Nokia has sought to widen Wibree’s availability by incorporating it into an existing forum, and the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. is the optimal forum for this new technology. The combined solution, called ultra low power Bluetooth technology, is another milestone on a wireless road with No Limits Ahead. According to current estimates, the first commercial version of the interoperability specification will be available during the first half of 2008. In the second half of 2008, we should begin to see the first standalone products (small button cell battery-powered devices) from a variety of vendors.
