Signature - Q4, 2007 - (Page 27) TRANSMIT YOUR PRESENCE The winner of our first Get in the Game contest developed a system that lets students and teachers experience more quality time in the classroom by wirelessly automating that familiar school drudgery: taking attendance. For his final computer science project at Northumbria University in Newcastle, United Kingdom, Kshitij Chopra developed an automated E-Attendance System (EAS) to track students’ class attendance via their Bluetooth enabled phones, PDAs and other devices. “The idea of making an automated attendance system was innately appealing to me,” Chopra says. “The only possible, effective, wireless way to do this was via Bluetooth technology, as this technology best works in short range and is most widely used, popular and available.” Participating students registered their device’s unique identification code on the EAS Web site. Then, when the lecturer took attendance at the beginning of a class, he or she searched for all registered devices within range and marked them in the database with a time stamp. (Find out more about the project by visiting www.kshitijchopra.com.) Students were very receptive to the EAS because it saved time at the beginning of each class. Lecturers also liked the system because it eliminated manual entry of attendance records. Chopra plans to continue enhancing the system and envisions a day when it could replace ID cards in the workplace or enable automated payments at vending machines. “I think with the upcoming ultra low power Bluetooth technology, the (system) will work beautifully,” he says. For his winning entry, Chopra received a prize package from Parrot Inc. valued at more than US$1,000. GET IN THE GAME HOW DO YOU ENVISION NO LIMITS AHEAD?
