Signature - Q4, 2007 - (Page 3) Connect | Photography by Tom Salt | Q4 ’07 Experience More The announcement this past June that the Wibree Forum will merge with the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. was yet another milestone in an already momentous year in our history. With the contribution of this ultra low power wireless technology to the Bluetooth core specification, in addition to the integration of high-speed UWB capabilities and the proliferation of Bluetooth enabled devices, we are well on our way to providing a complete spectrum of wireless connectivity to consumers. In fact, 2008 is shaping up to be our best year yet. With ultra low power chips expected to hit the market next year, Bluetooth enabled sensors and other low-power, short-range applications will finally become a reality. This will open up a whole new market for health-care telemetry devices, watches, automotive sensors, pedometers and other small, low-data applications. At the other end of the connectivity spectrum, High Speed Bluetooth technology will also officially hit the streets, opening up a range of use cases supporting voice, streaming content and file transfer applications. Think high-quality streaming video. All of this and more will be possible in what also happens to be the year we celebrate 10 years of Bluetooth technology. There are virtually no limits ahead when it comes to personal area networks powered by the most reliable, pervasive short-range wireless technology on the planet. What will the future look like? Rutgers University’s Disco Lab is exploring the concept of ubiquitous computing by developing forward-thinking Bluetooth enabled prototype applications that integrate multiple technologies. Check out our report on page 14. The automotive industry is also driving the future by ramping up inclusion of hands-free car integration kits and telematics solutions in 2008 models and beyond, when the phrase “smart car” will take on a whole new meaning. Find out more, starting on page 18. What role will Bluetooth technology play in tomorrow’s marketing and advertising methods? In our Bluetooth Technology Interactive article, page 12, we explore how one South African mall is using Bluetooth enabled proximity marketing to create highly targeted advertising campaigns. This issue also highlights new developments in Bluetooth technology itself, from the Phone Book Access Profile to testing to End Product Listings and beyond. There’s much more to discover in this issue of SIGnature magazine. The Road Ahead Nearly 10 years after it began, Bluetooth wireless technology is on a roll. By embracing other protocols we’re reaching down into the realm of ultra low power sensors and up into the future of High Speed Bluetooth technology. In this issue, you’ll find that the journey ahead looks promising for members and end users alike.
