Signature - Q4, 2007 - (Page 31) “Your product is more likely to be received positively by end users if it actually delivers the use case it appears to support. Experience Icon testing ensures that your product delivers as advertised.” — Peter Hauser, the Bluetooth SIG listing both mandatory and optional requirements. Interoperability Testing Suite (ITS) test cases are mandatory only for some of the profiles because the test cases for the other profiles are still being developed. In addition to conducting Icon tests, members wishing to use Icons with their products are encouraged to attend at least one UnPlugFest. “We highly recommend it, but we recognize that it’s not always possible,” Hauser explains. “UnPlugFests throw another level of implementation decisions into the mix, because members can test their products against other products that haven’t been released.” The key goal for the Experience Icon program is to help Bluetooth SIG members better define and communicate the capabilities of their products to consumers. That requires a consistent mechanism that consumers can rely on for a favorable experience. “Your product is more likely to be received positively by end users if it actually delivers the use case it appears to support,” says Hauser. “Experience Icon testing ensures that your product delivers as advertised.” David English is a technical writer whose articles have appeared in publications such as CNET, Forbes, Fortune, PC Magazine and ZDNet. FAST FACTS | The Case for Experience Icons Created to help consumers identify and purchase Bluetooth enabled products that address a particular need, the five Experience Icons represent the main use cases available with today’s Bluetooth technology: headset, music, print, input and transfer. Products bearing one of the Icons are designed to work with other products bearing the same Icon. Consumers can choose Bluetooth enabled devices by simply matching up the Experience Icons.
