IN THE NEWS NEWS All the news that’s fit to transmit from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group . . . The Wibree Forum, the group specifying the Nokia-developed ultra low power wireless technology, has been merged with the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. under a joint agreement between Nokia and the Bluetooth SIG. The Wibree specification is now a part of the Bluetooth wireless specification as an ultra low power Bluetooth technology, rounding out Bluetooth technology’s wireless Personal Area Networking (PAN) offering and enabling wireless connectivity for devices with very low battery capacity. “By including or referencing other wireless technologies like ultrawideband for high-speed applications, near field communication (NFC) for association, and now Wibree for ultra low power applications under the well-established Bluetooth technology profiles, we are opening up a host of new applications and functionality while keeping the user experience consistent,” says Bluetooth SIG Executive Director Mike Foley. “With Nokia’s innovative development and contribution to the Bluetooth wireless specification with Wibree, we will be able to deliver this in approximately a year.” Welcome Wibree Ultra low power Bluetooth technology is on its way, thanks to the contribution of Nokia’s Wibree technology to the Bluetooth wireless specification. Watch for the first version of the spec in early 2008. Nokia has been developing Wibree since 2001 and announced the technology last fall, with the intention of including it within an open industry forum to ensure its wide adoption. Notes Jarkko Sairanen, Nokia’s vice president of corporate strategy, “Including Wibree within an existing forum will ensure interoperability and its wide and fast adoption. The Bluetooth SIG is the optimal new home for Wibree.” Wibree was designed to work with two options – as an extension to a classic Bluetooth wireless radio and as a standalone implementation – and the Bluetooth SIG recognized the potential of Wibree to enhance current Bluetooth technology. The extension will allow watches, toys, sports and wellness, health-care and other very low power, sensor-type devices to be easily added to one’s personal area network. This opens a new range of mobile possibilities for end users. Thanks to its innovative design, Wibree consumes only a fraction of the power of classic Bluetooth wireless radios, in many cases making it possible to operate these devices for more than a year without recharging. 6 | SIGnature | Bluetooth.org ILLUSTRATION BY JOHN HERSEY, VEGAS PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES http://Bluetooth.org
