Signature Q4 2008 - (Page 30) Wacky Apps | By Mike Sharsky | Q4 ’08 You’re stuck in traffic. Horns are honking, people are pounding steering wheels and you’re getting a headache. Suddenly, you feel warmth near your heart, lasting for 30 seconds. While snarled traffic creeps along, you relax: Your sweetheart has just told you she loves you. It’s a scenario Richard Etter can envision for the Flame 5 jacket, made possible by Bluetooth wireless devices. “Most devices use explicit communication. You have to focus,” Etter says. “Here, the focus was to find something more unobtrusive. You can perceive it without moving your thoughts from what you are doing.” Along with fashion designer Nina Marquart and two research assistants, Etter developed the Flame 5 while he was an associate researcher at Ambiente Group in Zurich, Switzerland. The jacket has several embedded strips that heat up in response to signals sent via SMS text message from a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. A wearer can program the Flame 5 so that different places on the jacket heat up for varying lengths of time, depending on what message is sent and by whom. The jacket contains a Bluetooth enabled module to communicate with cell phones; a custom circuit board attached to the module interfaces with the heating elements, which are powered by a small battery pack. All hardware is stored in small pockets and can be detached before cleaning the jacket. “It’s part of a series of prototypes we’ve done,” says Etter, who notes that one such garment uses colored lights at the ends of the sleeves.
