AHR EXPO PREVIEW Big Apple Host Big Show New York venue expected to draw record crowd for Northeast. T he 2008 AHR Expo, scheduled for New York, January 22-24, is expected to establish new benchmarks for HVAC/R events held in the Northeast region, according to International Exposition Co., which produces and manages the event. As of December, some 1,757 exhibiting companies had contracted for more than 352,000 sq. ft. of space in the Javits Convention Center, surpassing all previous Northeast HVAC/R events, including the 1997 AHR Expo in Philadelphia that featured 315,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space. This month’s show will be nearly 20 percent larger than the 2002 Show in Atlantic City and almost a third (32 percent) bigger than the last New York AHR Expo held in 1991. IEC suggests that these figures point to a possible new attendance record for Northeast shows, making it one of the biggest in the exposition’s history. Those rosy expectations are also expected to carry over to the international aspect of the show, given that the 2008 expo has already surpassed the Northeast record for number of international exhibitors, with 371 non-U.S. companies from 49 countries. Show organizers are expecting a good turnout of international attendees, as well, since New York is an attractive venue for global visitors. “We are very pleased, but not surprised by these early results,” says Clay Stevens, president of IEC. “It has been 17 years since AHR Expo was held in New York so we think there will be a great deal of interest in the show and all the new features that have been added.” In addition to pavilions focused on segments of the marketplace, there will be a special emphasis on “green” products and issues. For example, a vast array of new, energy-efficient, “green” products will be on display from more than 1,800 companies around the world, and close to 200 of these exhibitors will also be showcasing Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) products and will feature IAQ signs in their booths. The most innovative “green” HVAC/R product has been selected as the winner of the prestigious 2008 AHR Expo Innovation Award in the “Green Building” category. Several of expo’s 28 endorsing associations will be offering free educational sessions dealing with “green” issues. Some of these sessions include: GreenSpeak: Understanding the Language and Concepts. Going Green: Reducing Emissions and Operating Costs in Commercial, Industrial or Process Heating Applications. Going Green and the Plan and Spec Representative. The AHR Expo is co-sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); and the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI). The Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) is an honorary sponsor.
