The consumer electronics industry is projected to post a 6.1 percent increase in revenues in 2008, according to the semi-annual industry forecast released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Overall shipment revenues are forecast to top $171 billion in 2008. Final shipment revenues for 2007, which totaled $161 billion, are estimated to have risen 8.2 percent over 2006. The overall projection for the rate of 2008 growth, although slightly lower than 2007 growth, is closer to the longterm historical average for the industry and is still above expected 2008 growth levels for many other industry sectors, including housing and new vehicles. Ltd. plans to change its company name to Panasonic Corp. effective Oct. 1, 2008. The name change is pending upon approval from the company’s shareholders, who will vote on the plan at a June meeting. The company plans to unify all of its corporate brands to the Panasonic brand across the world. The name changes are expected to be completed by March 31, 2010. The timing to change the company name and unify its global brand coincides with its 90th anniversary this year. The company had been named after its founder, Konosuke Matsushita. The company also announced that it plans to absorb its wholly owned subsidiary, Matsushita Refrigeration Co. The merger is expected to take effect on April 1.
