LG Electronics says it has strengthened its U.S. management team and realigned its regional operations to support its rapid growth in North America. Michael Ahn, who had served as both the president and CEO of LG Electronics North America, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., has named Teddy Hwang to assume the title of president of the North American company. Ingersoll-Rand Co. will acquire Trane, Piscataway, N.J., in a $10.1 billion deal that would create one of the world’s largest makers of air conditioners. Ingersoll-Rand’s businesses include Hussman, a maker of commercial refrigeration and food merchandising equipment, and Thermo King, a maker of climate control systems for transportation. The combined company is expected to have 2008 revenues of $17 billion. Trane recently sold off its kitchen and bath business, as well as its auto braking systems business. The liquid crys- � Economical tal display industry has seen two separate groups of Japanese companies form partnerships. Matsushita, Canon and Hitachi formed an alliance in the LCD business. Matsushita and Canon will each take 24.9 percent stake of Hitachi Displays Ltd. by the end of March. According to news reports, Canon will gain a steady supply of LCD panels, which will improve its time to market for new products. Matsushita will also get a stable supply of LCDs, but its main focus will remain on plasma display panels for its line of thin television sets. Hitachi hopes to improve development of cutting-edge LCD panels and to promote sales of LCD televisions. Another partnership was formed between Toshiba and Sharp in the LCD business. Toshiba will purchase LCD panels from Sharp. In turn, Sharp will buy more computer chips for use in LCDs from Toshiba as part of the expanded partnership. S.S.
