Appliance Design - February 2009 - (Page 25) illuminated latch for use in exterior applications. The company is working with a proprietary material that charges itself in the sunlight and lights up when the sun goes down. Bjorlin says that in the dark, the pull part of the latch will stand out in color, which would be useful for poorly lit areas or if there was a power outage. Customizability can also come from off the shelf products, including the Quadro Compact drawer slide from Hettich America, Alpharetta, Ga. The Quadro Compact is a reworking of Hettich’s established Quadro drawer slide line for cabinets that was redesigned for refrigerator and warming-drawer applications, says Kurt Weissenfels, national sales manager. Sub-Zero has already incorporated the Quadro Compact drawer slides into some of its new refrigerators. Sub-Zero is utilizing Hettich’s Silent System damping principle for their refrigerator Quadro slides. The Silent System technology cushions the way drawers come to rest at the end of the closing cycle, enabling them to “close with a whisper,” says Weissenfels. The slides, which operate from -25 DegC to 80 DegC, were designed with customizability in mind, Weissenfels says. The slide systems can mount facing up or down. They can mount to a sidewall, to the bottom of the refrigerator, or on a cantilevered connection for use in a refrigerator with “ladder” type shelf supports. The slide itself is invisible in that it does not have any open running surfaces. Unlike a slide on a cabinet drawer, in which the slide separates along the length of travel, the Compact is encapsulated and rides along a mounting bracket with the drawer; to add to the “invisible” theme, the mounting bracket comes in several colors to match an appliance’s color theme. The slide mounts to two brackets, and the distance between them can be customized to meet a particular design’s need. Because the slide mounts to the bracket, and the brackets are separated, there is a gap between the appliance wall and the slide. This allows air to flow freely between the wall and the slide, which Weissenfels says improves the efficiency and energy performance of the appliance. While the slide itself has been redesigned, what has remained the same is Hettich’s A TV on a position-control hinge that is 50 mm away from the wall.
