Electronics Show Energizes Spot Inc.’s SPOT Satellite Messenger. he 2008 Consumer Electronics Show was the biggest in history with a record 1.85-million net square feet of exhibit space that was filled with more than 20,000 new products. The show, held in Las Vegas Jan. 7 to 10, drew more than 2,700 companies who exhibited products in 32 product categories. Of the thousands of products on display, 32 of them were selected as winners of the annual Innovations awards. Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association, producer of the International CES, and endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America, the awards honored exceptional product and engineering design. t among the winners were: Oticon Inc. of Somerset, N.J., which won in the health care category for its Oticon Epoq advanced hearing aid that features ear-to-ear spatial sound. When a user wears two binaurally fitted Epoqs, they act as one “central processing unit” to coordinate sound. The nX6000 Noise-Cancelling Bluetooth Headset from CellPoint is used for handsfree mobile communications and features www.applianceDESIGN.com what the company calls the world’s most powerful DSP. Korea-based Emtrace Technologies’ Photoskins is a photo-frame that is thin enough to fit inside a wallet. When placed on a cradle, it can be used as a WidgetPlayer delivering desired information. Spot Inc. of Milipitas, Calif.,won with its personal communications product, the SPOT Satellite Messenger, that uses GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates, and then sends its location – with a link to Google Maps – and a preprogrammed message via a commercial satellite network. The Rainbow Wireless Speaker System, an ultra low loss, and no compression infrared technology made by Edifier Enterprises Canada Inc., Richmond, Canada. It is a wireless speaker solution for home audio systems. The company also won an award for its The E3350 speakers, which won in the Computer Peripherals category. Whirlpool’s centralpark connection refrigerator was also honored. This year, the company announced a number of new products to support the refrigerator’s plug-and-play capabilities. Now available is the CEIVA Digital Photo Frame that is Wi-Fi ready and features an 8 in. highresolution LCD screen with a built-in card reader. The frame can receive photos sent by camera phone or through an online CEIVA account. Whirlpool also showed a number of compatible prototypes, including the Brandmotion iPod Speaker System. It is a self-charging, iPod docking system with dual stereo speakers. The docking station has four large membrane-type buttons, and holds any sized iPod. The Clio Vu by Data Evolution is a convertible tablet computer that is equipped with Wi-Fi, and can be removed and used away from the refrigerator. It features a touch screen, keypad or handwriting device. The Cozi Family Organizational Software from Cozi features a calendar, photo and messaging features, and shopping list, which can be text messaged to a mobile phone. With the Quartet Qnote Message Center by Acco Brands, users can write a message on a dryerase writing surface that is made of tempered glass.
