COOLING TECHNOLOGIES results. Because of that, the element might be better used with a flat tube, microchannel heat exchanger. The technology can be used in different ways on a vapor compression system. The thermoelectric elements can be used on a condenser to increase the temperature of the fins by a few degrees, which Hwang says can increase the efficiency of the vapor compression system or a considerable reduction in heat exchanger size. Or, it can be used to enhance the sub cooling section of the heat exchanger without increasing the demands on condenser airflow rate. Since the thermoelectric coolers use electricity, the net gain in efficiency has to be sufficient to offset the increased use of electricity for the thermoelectrics. The COP of TE at small temperature lift is much higher than that of vapor compression cycle. Hwang and the other researchers working on TE have not extensively reported their experimental results anywhere yet since they are still experimenting with the technology. However, in some simulations using the VapCyc software, it was found that adding the elements could increase cooling capacity and COP. The simulation found a maximum theoretical improvement of 16.2 percent in COP and a corresponding increase of 20 percent in capacity. The technology is nearing the stage where it could be commercialized. Hwang is working with a thermoelectric module company as well as doing research on different brands of heat exchangers. He is hoping that the technology will be ready to market within the year.
