The U.S. Department of Energy is sponsoring a competition designed to spur lighting manufacturers to develop high efficiency solid-state lighting products to replace 60 W incandescent lamps and PAR 38 halogen lamps. The Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize competition, referred to as the L Prize, will award cash prizes, and may also lead to opportunities for federal purchasing agreements, utility programs, and other incentives. To meet the competition’s requirements, the lighting products must consume 17 percent less energy than is used by most incandescent lamps.
