According to Shane, the first thing his company does before recommending a noise or vibration reduction solution is to baseline test the device in an acoustic lab. “This will determine the sound level of the device and what are the noise sources,” he says. “We can determine the dominant frequencies for the noise source, and the noise pathways, and this will tell us how to treat the device. While determining the source of the noise and the identifying the optimal material solution to throw at it are substantial challenges in and of themselves, a bigger challenge is often convincing OEMs to devote more attention to reducing noise.
