Appliance Design - August 2007 - (Page 9) NEWS WATCH ‘WHITE’ GOODS? By the end of 2011, nearly 25 percent of major home appliances sold worldwide will be non-white, with this proportion being even greater in the highend segment, according to a new report from IMS Research. Major home appliances with stainless steel or other colored finishes were estimated to account for more than 15 percent of total worldwide shipments in 2006, and the majority of this volume was concentrated in the value-added, higherend of the market. The study reveals that the proportion of non-white appliances worldwide is forecast to grow 7.8 percent between 2006 and 2011. The hidden control panels on Dacor’s new 24-in. dishwashers utilize SimTouch interface technology from White Electronic Designs Corp., Phoenix. The interface is found on Dacor Epicure, Millennia, Preference and Integrated Collection dishwashers. The SimTouch keypad integrates light actuation force switches for precise digital control and easy operation. SimTouch keypads are designed to emulate the feather light responsiveness of capacitive touch switches, but at a fraction of the cost. Wayne Parkinson, vice president of business development for White Electronic Designs, said that the Dacor implementation further confirms how SimTouch can help companies achieve product design goals for both cost and performance and differentiate their products. Parkinson added that SimTouch technology is also being utilized by other makers high-end appliances. DE’LONGHI DIVIDES. The board of directors of Italian household appliances maker De’Longhi approved a reorganization plan that will divide the company into separate entities: household and professional areas. De’Longhi will operate the household branch by a wholly owned company, called De’Longhi Appliances. The company will transfer its 100 percent stake in local thermo-cooling machines made by Climavenata to another wholly owned company, called De’Longhi Professional. GROUPS TARGET CFCs. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and AirConditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the United Nations Environment Program have agreed to cooperate on technical issues such as assessing and addressing remaining chlorofluorocarbon-based chillers. The two organizations will promote sustainable activities in areas such as emissions reduction and energy efficient systems and building design. ENERGY POLICE. Chinese inspectors in Beijing and Yangzhou are checking offices, schools, shopping malls, and other buildings to make sure that they are meeting national standards by keeping the air conditioning no cooler than 78 DegF and heating no higher than 68 DegF. This is part of a plan to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product 20 percent by 2010. Long-term resistance to switch actuation stress. Outstanding resistance to hostile environments and chemicals.
