Royal Phillips Electronics of the Netherlands has introduced two new models of 3D displays that do not require special viewing glasses. The 22-in. and 52-in. displays feature WOWvx technology that uses 2D-plus Depth format including Declipse, which gives additional occlusion information for what the company calls a real 3D look-around effect. The technology uses image-processing software, plus display hardware that includes sheets of tiny lenses atop LCD screens. The lenses project slightly different images to viewer’s left and right eyes, which the brain translates into a perception of depth. The 22-in. auto-stereoscopic 3D Display is based on a WSXGA (1,680 x 1,050) LCD panel with an aspect ratio of 16:10, offering full brightness (300 cd/m2), full contrast (1,000:1), and a response time of 5 ms. It is available as a frame mount or desktop display. The 52-in. auto-stereoscopic 3D display is based on a full HD (1,920 x 1,080) LCD panel, offering 700 cd/m2 full brightness, full contrast (2,000:1), and a response time of 8 ms. Both displays are scheduled to be available in the fourth quarter of 2008. According to published reports there is a planned deployment of about 50 screens in U.S. theater lobbies, as well as shopping malls in South Africa, malls and coffee shops in Russia, and European casinos and theme parks.
