HACCP is a globally accepted method of preventing food-borne illnesses by ensuring that cold and hot food items are kept at safe temperature. McDonald’s has made it a “cornerstone” of their food safety approach. “Open, standards-based technologies are very important for McDonald’s because we believe the food service industry will follow suit and realize the benefits of networked equipment, including streamlined operations and energy reduction,” says Bernard Morauw, senior director, Worldwide Equipment Systems for McDonald’s Corp. “The LonWorks platform allows multiple manufacturers around the world to have clear open standards to provide integrated solutions to McDonald’s restaurants.” The contract with the restaurant chain presents a new opportunity for Echelon, says Barry Haaser, senior business director, LonWorks Infrastructure. In the past, the company primarily developed networked systems for building automation. McDonald’s might take advantage of this capability in the future as it looks to integrate the kitchen to the building. “We can tell you the exact number of Big have the option to incorporate networking technology from Alliance Laundry Systems of Ripon, Wis., the parent company of several laundry equipment manufacturers such as Speed Queen. The company offers UniLinc control that allows the management to better track data and control equipment. “With its advanced reporting and labor-saving traits, UniLinc will have managers looking at their laundries less as cost centers and more as contributors to overall profitability,” says Kim Shady, vice president of distributor sales for UniMac. According to Shady, UniLinc helps track data such as idle time between cycles, and can delay start a washer-extractor so it can be loaded the night before and programmed to start before employees arrive the next morning. Thirty programmable water levels and 41 available cycles enable operators the highest level of control of the wash process and help save on water costs. UniLinc also offers advanced maintenance data and reminders of tasks to be performed. It tracks error codes, with date and time of the occurrences, to assist Enodis asked operators to identify the categories of energy-efficient products they had purchased over the past two years. Eighty six percent (86%) of respondents indicated they had purchased some form of energy-saving food or beverage equipment in the past two years. Macs, shakes and fries are sold at any one time,” Haaser says. “With that data, you could then start tuning the building to heat or cool the building to adapt to the number of people in the restaurant at any one time.” Clean data Networking is being integrated into many applications.
