Appliance Design - September 2007 - (Page 35) COMMERCIAL APPLIANCES Atlanta-based company that sells refrigeration units and components, recently released new glycol unit coolers for its Bohn and Larkin brands. The new glycol unit cooler line is designed for secondary loop refrigeration systems in supermarkets. Glycol is non-toxic, non-flammable and does not contribute to global warming. Celena Evans, senior product manager, says that a large supermarket may contain up to 5,000 pounds of refrigerant circulating through walk-in coolers and display cases, and could experience leak rates of up to 30 percent. With the new product, the primary loop uses conventional refrigerant to cool the glycol. Then, the glycol is pumped through a secondary loop refrigeration system to cool the refrigerated spaces that may come in contact with food. “Using a glycol secondary loop system eliminates the opportunity for leaks near food because potentially harmful refrigerant is restricted to a machine room,” she says. Glycol cooling units are finding their way into a number of systems. Denmark-based MicroMatic offers glycol cooling units in its beer dispensing systems. These systems are capable of delivering draft beer up to 500 feet. The company’s Power Pack refrigerates a Propylene Glycol and water mixture contained in a reservoir to between 29 DegF and 32 DegF. Take the chill off Frost on evaporator coils is one of the areas that can contribute to energy efficiency loss in commercial refrigeration. Most units are set to defrost at preset times, typically four times a day, but not every defrost is necessary. To address this issue, Heatcraft has developed the Smart Defrost Kit. It is a standalone control module that reduces the number of unnecessary defrosts while defrosting only when necessary. The SDK “learns” the application and evaluates whether frost accumulation is significant enough to initiate a defrost cycle. Jim Kitchen, senior product manager for controls, says pressure and temperature sensors build a statistical model of the application and learns about the specific application. “It normally takes about 10 cycles before it has completely learned everything that it needs to, but it can start the process immediately The INTELA-TRAUL controller employs alarms – visible and audible if desired – to notify operators immediately when a door is left open.
