Appliance Design - September 2007 - (Page 37) COMMERCIAL APPLIANCES When equipped with the add on unit, energy consumption is comparable in daily performance to new Energy Star qualified machines. It does so by powering down the machine when the surrounding area is vacant and monitoring room temperature and adjusting the cooling system accordingly. Recently, two counties in California incorporated VendingMiser technology into its vending machine. The Los Angeles South Bay Cities Council of Governments installed VendingMiser on vending machines in 15 cities south of Los Angeles and estimates that it will save more than $40,000 in annual energy costs. Saving energy is becoming even more important as the unit’s capabilities grow. Today’s vending machines offer more products for sale, some of which require improved refrigeration technology and mechanics, and in some cases they are becoming multimedia outlets. One example is found in the vending machines developed by Automated Vending Technologies, Corona, Calif., that incorporate state-of-the art video and communication technology. Shannon Illingworth, company founder, says, “We came out and saw that the vending machine market was traditional and boring and we wanted to take it to the next level.” The company’s RAM line includes an LCD/DVD media package that can be used to sell advertising. Some vending machine owners have reported upwards of $1,000 per month in advertising revenue per machine. The units feature touch-screen vending, a drop-sensing technology, and USB data collection. Managers can remotely track the machine through the DigitaVending Management System software to check on inventory, required repairs and other data. The machines can also accept ATM cards and several different credit cards. AVT’s ability to conduct a cashless transaction is part of a growing phenomenon. Some machines such as AVTs are already accepting debit and credit cards, and proximity systems. Soon, cell phones will be able to be used.
