CAUTION: Objects On Glass May Fly Off Your Shelves Merchandisers with heated glass shelves let you sell more by offering greater visibility than ordinary displays. Your customers get a perfect view of tempting foods, which dramatically increases impulse sales. Marsco’s heated glass sends the warmth in two directions: upward to keep the glass shelf warm and downward to blanket the product below. It’s easy to clean and provides much more even heat than traditional coil heaters. With Marsco heated glass, they’ll see it—and buy it—like never before. Eventually, the percentage of machines in the field with this capability will increase as older machines are taken out of service. Kasavana, a proponent of what he calls V-commerce, says that his initial estimate was that about 50 percent of those that have the capability to accept cashless transactions would do so by 2009. In the past, the thinking was that not every machine was well suited to cashless transactions. What with credit card processing fees, vending machines with this capability tended to make more sense when selling higher price point products or when the machine was located in a larger traffic area. Or so thinking went. Now, he thinks that that level may be conservative, as credit card companies, bottlers and vending machine owners and consumers accept the practice. Smart card readers such as the industry-leading e-Port technology from USA Technologies are becoming more popular. The machine’s accept the cards and transmit the transaction to the merchant via radio frequency technology. Jim Turner, vice president of USA Technologies, says that the use of cashless transactions will grow now that major credit card companies have agreed to accept these payments. In the past, they were afraid that the number of small transactions would be too large to be profitable, but the phenomenal growth in 99-cent iTunes purchases was a factor in changing their minds, he says. An additional impetus may come from a Federal Reserve Board ruling that says that vending machines do not have to give a receipt for purchases of under $15. This means that receipt printers wouldn’t be needed, thereby reducing cost and maintenance issues. The future of vending, Kasavana says, lies in offering more and better products, faster and more conveniently. He foresees consumers e-mailing orders for restaurant-quality food. What Kasavana sees for vending, might be said of all commercial appliances. More and more, technology is being incorporated into these appliances and are making them more user and environmentally friendly. < For more information, enter numbers: Echelon Corp. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .300 Or email: bhaaser@echelon.com Heatcraft . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .301 Or email: suellen.heintz@heatcraftrpd.com USA Technologies . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .302 Or email: WJenkins@usatech.com www.applianceDESIGN.com For more Information Enter 125 38 applianceDESIGN AD09074Mar.indd 1 September 2007 8/9/07 1:04:02 PM http://www.mgpglass.com http://www.appliancedesign.com
