The Federal Communications Commission has approved the merger of Sirius Satellite and XM Satellite Radio. The value of the deal was not released, but according to published reports the deal initially was valued at $13 billion. The new satellite radio company formed by Sirius’ buyout of its rival will be called Sirius AM Radio. The combined company has more than 18.5 million subscribers, and with only 10 percent of the home and car radio market subscribing to satellite radio, company officials feel there are significant growth prospects. The merger ended a nearly year and a half regulatory process during which the company pointed to costs savings for the company and consumers, and first-ever profits for the industry, found that most consumers do not keep refrigerator temperatures at safe levels, and do not clean their refrigerators often enough. Researchers speaking at the Institute of Food Technologists’ Annual Meeting found that only 20 percent of consumers use thermometers, and only 30 percent were aware that they should have them in their refrigerators. The IFT’s International Food Information Council (IFIC) has drafted an advertising campaign to encourage consumers to purchase thermometers, keep the refrigerator at 40 DegF or below, and monitor temperature several times a day. The IFIC also reported that consumers are not cleaning their refrigerator often enough. The recommended cleaning regimen is once a week, but one study found only 50 percent of consumers cleaned their temperature just once a month.
