Not only are there many new devices coming on the market all the time, they are being employed in multiples. In the past, a household may have had one television, one audio player, one computer, and so forth, serving the entire household. Today it has become common for individual members of the household to have their own set of devices. Adding further to the multiplicity is the tendency to hold on to older devices even after newer versions are purchased. Another reason for the changing status between product groups is that, while newer appliances typically use less electricity than previous versions, newer, more heavily featured electronic goods often use more than their predecessors. The report says that some of the newer, larger flat-panel televisions can use up to two to three times more electricity than traditional CRT televisions. And, with all of their remote control circuits, charging stations, and power supplies, consumer electronics products collectively use more standby power than appliances also. The report says that some game consoles, for example, utilize almost as much electricity in the idle mode as they consume when they are actually being used. The study also suggests that it isn’t just the increased presence of electronic devices in the home, but that they are used in a more energy-intensive manner. For example, the study reports that listening to a radio through a digital television uses 10 to 20 times more electricity than just listening to the radio itself. The report also projects that, by 2020, the combination of computers and peripherals, entertainment devices and other electronic gadgets will account for 45 percent of electricity used in the home.
