The Environmental Protection Agency set standards for gas-powered lawn and garden equipment, as well as engines for marine watercraft. The rule takes effect in 2011 for lawn and garden equipment of 25 HP or less. The EPA says that to meet the exhaust emission standards, manufacturers can employ catalytic converters, which the EPA says is feasible and safe. When fully implemented, the EPA says the rule will yield annual emission reductions of 600,000 tons of hydrocarbons, 130,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx), 5,500 tons of direct particulate matter, and 1.5 million tons of carbon monoxide (CO). The new standards will save 190 million gallons of gasoline each year, the agency says. S.S. LG Electronics has relocated its U.S. Design Center from Englewood Cliffs, N.J., to New York City. Focusing on industrial design, the center will look to incorporate global design trends into new mobile handsets and devices, flat-screen HDTVs and audio systems, digital appliances, and other products. The relocation is a part of the company’s global business strategy that includes increasing investment in regional design, research and development. LG Electronics has launched a nationwide electronics-recycling program in conjunction with Waste Management’s Recycle America subsidiary. The program was initially launched with 160 locations across the country, and was expected to include recycling sites in all 50 states in September. Consumers can recycle electronic products by dropping them off at designated Waste Management eCycling Centers. Products that will be accepted include LG, Zenith, and Goldstar brands of TVs, monitors, audio equipment, VCRs, DVD players, combination units, and accessories associated with those products. S.S.
