For instance iCall.com says that calls to domestic phone numbers are free, but to dial or receive calls, the iCall customer must be at their computer. Another service, Jajah.com, allows unlimited free calls to anyone who signed up for a free Jajah account in the U.S., Canada and 35 other countries. It works with a regular phone and requires no special equipment, contract, monthly fees or prepayment. A Web browser is needed to initiate the calls from the Jajah.com Web site and the site calls both the dialer and receiver of the call. Other companies offering services include TMobile and PhoneGnome. T-Mobile’s new HotSpot@Home cell phones allows users to make unlimited free calls, but requires an additional $10 a month to the existing voice plan. With PhoneGnome, calls can be made like the Jajah.com service, through a headset at a computer, or via a VoIP type service in which a consumer buys a $100 box. The box plugs into the home phone and the broadband model. If calling a PhoneGnome member, the calls are free. If not, there is a nominal fee. One of the newest VoIP products on the market is called Ooma made by a SilionValley company called Ooma. The service requires the purchase of a $399 Ooma Hub, a device that the Wall Street Journal described as looking like an answering machine. After the initial cost, there are no monthly bills.
