Appliance Design - December 2007 - (Page 14) NEW PRODUCTS FERRO ELECTRONIC MATERIAL SYSTEMS New RoHS-compliant MCS Metal Core Substrate Materials are matched systems that enable integration of electronic elements on low carbon steel, stainless steels, and aluminum substrates to reduce the overall size of end products and increase the durability of circuits. MCS dielectrics meet safety requirements of IEC 60335-1, the International Standard for Household and similar electrical appliances. Flat-panel heating elements using MCS material systems have performed successfully in low-energy prototype ovens. The materials are compatible systems of dielectrics, resistors, conductors, overglazes, and thermistors that are optimized for particular deposition systems and substrate types. In addition to white LED backlighting from an ultra-thin, low-power package, MicroLens light guides can provide discrete area backlighting for different parts of the display, including backlighting of the LCD, overlays such as characters and logos, buttons, keypads and any other areas that need illumination. The 2-LED MicroLens light guide measures 4.3 in. at its widest point, 4.5 in. at its longest point, and 0.8 mm thick (or less). It can backlight a thermostat with multiple discrete areas requiring illumination. Up to nine discrete areas can be illuminated. Measuring 10.1-mm long x 3.12-mm wide and high, the 456 Series was designed for situations where an ultra-small profile, higher-amp, pick-andplace surface mount fuse is desired. The 456 Series enables circuit engineers to design-in reliable primary and secondary over-current protection with a single miniature fuse, the company says. These new MCUs offer real-time networking, larger on-chip memories, enhanced power management, and expanded I/O capabilities, the company says. Evaluation kits for the new MCUs are available. The LM3S6000 series feature an integrated 100 Mbps Ethernet solution with ARM architecture compatibility. The devices combine both the Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) layers for integrated connectivity with an ARM Cortex- M3 MCU. It is the only integrated 10/100 Ethernet MAC and PHY available in an ARM architecture MCU, the company says. The Stellaris LM3S2000 series, designed for Controller Area Network (CAN) applications, extends the Stellaris family with Bosch CAN networking technology. The module is suited to adding USB flash disk connectivity to industrial and commercial products. Typical usage includes data capture and transfer, diagnostic analysis and software updates. The module requires only four signal lines, 5V supply and ground in order to be connected to the attached device. The VDRIVE2 is packaged in a neat, snap-in, plastic enclosure with a bi-color LED providing power and status indication along with a single USB type ‘A’ socket. The module can be used as a development and evaluation platform for the Vinculum IC. Enter 307 Or email: keith.dingwall@ftdichip.com 14 applianceDESIGN December 2007 W. L. GORE & ASSOCIATES The GAW324 and GAW325 protective vents for acoustic applications contain a new material designed to minimize the amount of sound transmission lost through audio port coverings. The GAW324 vent provides protection against water, while the GAW325 provides oleophobic, or “oil-fearing,” protection against liquids such as oils, soaps, and alcohols. Made of an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane, the vents prevent water and most environmental contaminants from entering the device through the acoustic ports in the device housing. Using GORE Protective Vents also reduces the possibility of condensation buildup inside the housing, because water vapor can escape through the microporous membrane in the vent.
