Assembly Planbook - June 2008 - (Page 18) Assembly Lines Ford Joins Climate Registry DEARBORN, MI—Ford Motor Co. has become the first automaker to join The Climate Registry (TCR), a not-for-profit organization that measures and reports greenhouse gas emissions across multiple industries using a single reporting standard. TCR is currently involved in a number of state-sponsored greenhouse gas reporting efforts, including the California Climate Action Registry and the Eastern Climate Registry. A number of provinces in Canada and some states in Mexico have adopted the TCR standard as well. “A single reporting standard is easier for its members and administrators to manage and more cost effective than developing new tools on a state-by-state basis,” says Ford global environmental policy manager Larry Merritt. Ikea Subsidiary Opens Its First U.S. Plant ANGELHOLM, Sweden— Swedwood North America, a subsidiary of furniture maker Ikea Group, is building a new 810,000-square-foot plant in Danville, VA, to produce bookshelves, coffee tables, modular entertainment systems and wardrobe frames. The facility is expected to ramp up later this year and will create approximately 740 jobs. “The close proximity to many Ikea stores and distribution centers, coupled with good regional infrastructure and available land, make Danville ideal for this North American production facility,” says Swedwood North America President Bengt Danielsson. Founded in 1991, Swedwood has 13,000 employees and operates 36 production facilities in nine countries Commerce Department Releases Updated Trade Guide WASHINGTON—The manufacturing and services division of the Commerce Department’s International Trade Administration has published an updated version of its Trade Finance Guide: A Quick Reference for U.S. Exporters. The guide is intended to serve as a resource for small and mediumsized companies interested in doing business aboard. “Since its publication last year, the guide has been an effective, useful finance resource for America’s small- and medium-sized enterprises,” says commerce assistant secretary for manufacturing and services William G. Sutton. “This tool helps enterprises turn export opportunities into actual sales and makes it easier for them to do business internationally.” Among other changes, the second edition includes a new chapter on foreign exchange risk management to help companies avoid losses when trading across multiple currencies. The guide is available online at www.trade.gov. Evergreen Solar Expanding in New England MARLBORO, MA—Solar panel manufacturer Evergreen Solar Inc. is expanding its factory in Devens, MA, so that it will have 160 megawatts of production capacity by the end of next year. “With this expansion, we will have approximately 1,000 employees in Massachusetts in 2009, triple our employee base today,” says Evergreen CEO Richard Feldt.
