Assembly Planbook - June 2008 - (Page 65) Press Swages Ball Joints This high-force electromechanical assembly press was built to assemble a family of 12 stabilizer bars into ball sockets with a swaging process. The press is 5 feet tall, weighs almost 3,500 pounds and delivers a maximum force of 112,404 pounds. Its stroke length is 15.75 inches, and the ram has a top speed of 8 ips. Integrated into an automatic assembly system, the press produces a ball joint every 8 seconds, precisely monitoring and controlling force and position throughout the operation. The wrench has a free-spinning bearing ring and an ergonomically designed thumbwheel for reversing direction. When the tool is under load, torque is spread across 17 teeth inside the head, each of which bears just 6 percent of the total load. The tool is available with drive sizes of 0.25, 0.375 and 0.5 inch. Handle lengths range from 4.5 to 16 inches.
