Assembly - February 2009 - (Page 21) set to enter commercial production in 2011. By choosing a partner in this effort, Peugeot Citroën hopes to introduce the new technology to the European market much faster than it could on its own. In addition to developing the technology, Bosch will supply a number of parts for the new vehicles once they go into production, including motors and alternators. Airbus Begins A350 Plant Construction TOULOUSE, France—Airbus has begun constructing a new plant in Toulouse where it will perform final assembly of its new A350 XWB wide-body commercial jet, scheduled to enter service in 2013. The 800,000-square-foot facility will be used to join the fuselage sections and wings on each new A350 XWB. The planes will then be moved to another nearby facility where all the cabin equipment will be installed. The $185 million facility will employ approximately 1,000 people at full capacity, and is being billed as the most “eco-efficient” assembly plant the company has ever built. “The start of construction work on our new final assembly line confirms that the A350 XWB is making steady progress,” says Airbus CEO Tom Enders. “The global Airbus community, including our employees, suppliers and customers, is working closely together for the success of this program.” Set to go head-to-head against Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, which is also still in development, the A350 has already logged approximately 475 orders from nearly 30 different customers worldwide.
