I admit the last thing I’m thinking about is printed circuit boards and I’m reaching for some more nachos when a promo for 60 Minutes flashes on the big screen. As any religious NFL fan would tell you, it is something you don’t normally pay any mind and you quickly turn your attention to your beer and wait for CBS to finish paying the bills. But this promo caught my attention and my ban on thinking about work while watching football was soon lifted. A somewhat unnerving confr confrontation between a news crew and a band of thugs was unfoldin over the illegal burning unfolding of dangerous electronic com components in a secret compound in China. N only the content of Not the 20-seco spot but the obvious 20-second violent undertones of the viole encounter prompted me to watch the full story and read the transcript. As I watched, and later read, about the illegal activity in this China a town—the effects it was t having on the water conh sumed and the air breathed su by its children, the people who wh were profiting from it, and the unfortunate number of people and companies whose lack of vigilance was who letting letti it happen—I immediately diate started to think about the iro irony of the IPC’s recent lobbying fo reforms in EPA stanfor dards for the PCB i industry. In contrast to the blata disregard and illegality blatant of what was happening in China is the hard work and vigilance of organizations like IPC in overco overcoming roadblocks that keep the printed circuit board industry from doing t right thing—recycling the this material. As is usually the case, the answer lies in the middle ground between two midd extremes: too much oversight and no oversight at all. It’s a balance.
