CircuiTree - February 2009 - (Page 22) Are Better PCB Design Tools and Manufacturing Enough to Stay Competitive? Electrical/ Mechanical Collaboration Another example of adding efficiency to the development process is to provide collaboration between the design of the PCB(s) and the design of the product enclosure. A recently developed industry standard has defined data formats and communication protocols (Figure 4) for bidirectional, incremental change proposals between the electrical CAD (ECAD) and mechanical CAD (MCAD) disciplines. ECAD and MCAD suppliers are utilizing this standard to enable automated collaboration. An example of this collaboration would begin with a proposal to move a component that is interfering with the enclosure based on analysis by the MCAD designer. The MCAD designer would propose the component move to a new location. This proposal is communicated to the PCB designer (Figure 5), who has the opportunity to test it in the PCB tool. The PCB designer can then either accept the proposal or make a counterproposal. This negation process continues in real time until agreement is reached, at which time the agreed upon change is updated in the respective databases. Getting to Target Yields Proceeding rapidly through the PCB design process and delivering data to manufacturing does not necessarily mean that we have reached our volume production goals. If a situation exists that causes lower than target yields, one or more design respins may be required to reach those goals and ensure that we hit the target market window with full volume production. Sometimes we cannot foresee these problems and re-spins are necessary but we can PCB Layout – EDMD Schema – XML Protocol Mechanical Design Figure 3 Software Enables Collaboration Between Design and the Supply Chain Figure 4 The ProSTEP iViP EDMD Industry Standard Can Be Implemented By ECAD and MCAD Suppliers to Enable Bidirectional Collaboration 22 February 2009 • circuitree.com CT02094WiSoft.indd 1 1/12/09 2:57:28 PM http://www.wssi.com/ct http://www.wssi.com/ct http://www.circuitree.com
