But the benefit of this experience can only help if we reflect the desired change back into the best practices of the PCB design process as a go-forward design-for-manufacturability rule. A real-life example of this practice was experienced recently by a cell phone manufacturer. The company discovered that a small change (Figure 6) to the solder stencil of a commonly used part could significantly affect its manufacturing yield. This discovery required several design re-spins and slowed its time to volume for that product. However, the company learned from that experience and reflected that change back into the PCB design process for future products. With this level of manufacturing to design collaboration, future products will reach target volume production targets faster and add to the bottom-line profit of the OEM. Summary Fast PCB design and efficient manufacturing are not enough to enable electronics companies to meet their common business goals of getting the most competitive product to market faster with low development costs. Yes, these are extremely important and we must continue to focus our efforts on improving these processes. But we also need to improve the efficiency of the entire product development process by providing multidiscipline collaboration capabilities. Design to supply chain, ECAD to MCAD, PCB design to IC/Package/FPGA design, manufacturing back to PCB design, and so on are all collaboration examples of where we can improve the process. ■ John Isaac is director of market development, systems design division, Mentor Graphics.
