Wolters ne of the most basic and natural concepts behind the U.S. economy and its financial markets is the idea of the velocity of money. Simply stated, it says that as money funnels its way through the economy it actual grows in value. An initial USD 100 of investment that finds its way from supplier to manufacturer to final product and sale has grown and provided a much greater value than the initial USD 100 investment. The same can be said of innovation. In much the same way, an innovative idea or product can find its way through the marketplace and become part of many more products across many more industries than it was originally intended. The printed circuit board is a good example. Credited as the first printed circuit board, Dr. Paul Eisler’s invention was designed to replace radio tube wiring in post World War II England. Today, PCBs are part of products for computers, TVs, home appliances, automobiles, and a great deal more. O However, the velocity of innovation is dependent, at the least, on two somewhat contradictory things: competition and collaboration. Competition is what drives us to produce and provide the best products possible — to do it better than the other guy. But doing it better than the competition and providing the highest quality goods means strengthening our collaborative efforts with suppliers and between designers and manufacturers. For more on the importance of collaboration in all aspects of product development, read this month’s feature article, “Are Better PCB Design Tools and Manufacturing Enough to Stay Competitive.” In addition, CircuiTree’s columnists Dan Beaulieu, Joe Fjelstad, and Dan Feinberg provide information and analysis on staying competitive as we all battle the concern that the velocity of money seems to have come to a screeching halt.
