The company, which owns eight supermarkets in the area, sponsored the Memorial Picnic Giveaway. A flyer inviting customers to “Treat yourself, friends and family to an exciting Memorial Day Picnic april 2009 memorial da y l Giveaway!” featured pictures of favorite picnic food including meat, buns, drinks and snacks, and explained the winner would walk away with enough to serve 12 family members and friends. The catch: people had to visit one of Stauffers’ stores to enter the contest. That delivered a double promotional punch, since the contest was a reminder to plan Memorial Day events (and corresponding grocery lists), and drove business during the pre-Memorial Day time frame, too. With May 25 fast approaching, it is time for supermarkets—deli departments in particular—to consider ways to pump up sales during a weekend considered the kick-off to the summer dining and entertaining season.
