As commercial building owners strive to meet growing tenant demand for clean energy, solar certification becomes an important factor to any decision to “go green.” According to solarX, while LEED and ENERGY STAR allow for clean and/or efficient energy, neither program focuses on solar energy usage alone. For commercial real estate owners moving toward solar energy, this lack of certification creates a problem. XFactor Solar Certification measures several components including carbon offset, total power consumption from solar, peek load reduction, solar panel positioning, and other criteria. Buildings receive XFactor Solar Certification levels based on how they score in each area measured. For more information, visit www.solarxcorp. com/certification. benchmarking across portfolios. The tools assess new building designs, existing building operations and interior fit-outs in terms of their energy, water and environmental impact as well as the health and comfort of building occupants. ECD developed Green Globes for new construction and existing buildings. It is licensed and overseen in the United States by the GBI. In Canada, the Green Globes system for existing buildings is licensed and overseen by BOMA Canada under the brand name “Go Green” (Visez vert). Under the terms of this acquisition, these Green Globes standards will be kept independent from Jones Lang LaSalle and operated under the governance of the GBI in the United States and BOMA in Canada. Lanka, which is being designed by the Minneapolis office of Perkins+Will, is looking to achieve a number of sustainable firsts with the first Medical Bio-Anaerobic incinerator, the first community energy resource, the first modern use of open air terraces off patient rooms and the first incorporation of eight stories of open air water cooling waterfall. The goal is create the “model” LEED/ GGHC medical center and to achieve “living building” status. REINVENTING THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE San Francisco, Calif. — Scheduled for completion in 2011, the new Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) Hospital, United Arab Emirates, is a 360-bed hospital and clinic located on Al Sowa Island, adjacent to the new Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange. DEVELOPER OF GREEN GLOBES AND GO GREEN INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE TOOLS ACQUIRED Chicago — Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., an integrated financial and professional services firm specializing in real estate, announced the acquisition of the environmental consulting firm, ECD Energy, best known as the developer of technology underlying environmental rating systems for buildings, including Green Globes for the Green Building Initiative (GBI) The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) Hospital, United Arab Emirates. WWW.EDCMAG.COM and Go Green for BOMA Canada. “Our clients are asking for guidance — to help define sustainability for their real estate portfolios, provide benchmarking tools to better manage their properties, as well as a practical roadmap to improve property performance,” said Lauralee Martin, Global COO of Jones Lang LaSalle. “There are a number of strong and developing property standards around the world, all of which we strongly support, such as LEED, BREEAM and ENERGY STAR, but there are few efficient tools like the Green Globes/Go Green programs that allow owners to bring their entire portfolios up to these standards. ECD has demonstrated real leadership in sustainability strategy and has developed a wide range of sustainability tools that can help our clients address the carbon footprint of their entire portfolio.” Jones Lang LaSalle also gains use of ECD’s technology platform for assessing the sustainability profile of commercial buildings and Designed by HDR Architecture, Inc., plentiful indoor and outdoor spaces are purposefully designed to offer healing environments, gathering spaces and wayfinding. With the inclusion of soothing water features, the expansive gardens not only allow occupants to experience the tranquility of the site, but create places that build a sense of community within the setting by fostering human interaction. According to HDR, the architecture adheres to stringent sustainability guidelines with the promise of achieving LEED Gold certification despite the climate’s harsh challenges. “A dual curtain wall design serves as a kind of ‘respiratory system’ for the building,” describes Alexander Wu, design director. “Air is circulated between the glass walls to insulate the building from the climate, helping to significantly reduce the building’s cooling load. Other sustainable design features include the use of photovoltaics to relieve electrical loads and the reuse of gray water and storm water to reduce dependency on desalinated water.” Visit www.hdrinc.com for more information. Additionally, the 500,000-square-foot facility is designed for catastrophic events such as hurricanes, Tsunami and earthquakes. This facility is designed to provide service and shelter during and following a natural disaster — in fact, the facility hopes to sustain itself and the community in times of natural disaster. For the immediate community, this facility will be the supplier of energy and a collector of waste products. In addition, the community will be encouraged to use the hospital as a civic building rather than just a place to come during health issues. It is being designed to handle 85 to 98 percent of its waste on-site; to use 30 to 50 percent less energy to operate than similar sized facilities; to collect or process 100 percent of all water needs on-site; to reduce water usage 40 to 60 percent versus similar sized hospitals; and produce on-site 100 percent of the natural gas and electricity needed to operate the hospital. Rodgers, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, launched a new DOE program — called EnergySmart Hospitals — at the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Conference and Technical Exhibition in National Harbor. ASHE and DOE partnered together to develop the program, which is designed to bring together health leaders and DOE energy efficiency experts to implement efficient and renewable energy technologies for all hospitals.
