Owned by Seton Healthcare Network, the hospital was located in downtown Austin and served 46 counties in central Texas, providing comprehensive clinical care. Seton Network Facilities and the selected project team planned and designed a new facility that is slated to become the first hospital in the world to be awarded Platinum certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program — the $200 million, 473,000-square-foot Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas. T ment to the project would provide the genesis for further development at Mueller. Seton purchased 32 acres to develop its new campus and began working with the project team to build a facility that would accommodate the future children’s hospital. Developed to ultimately yield 1.4 million square feet of building area, the 32-acre site includes the hospital, an energy plant, medical office buildings, parking garages to accommodate 5,000 vehicles and a Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House project, part of a national network of residential facilities for families with children undergoing hospital treatment, was recently awarded LEED Platinum certification and is the first building in Austin and the second in Texas to receive such status. AUGUST 2008 ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN + CONSTRUCTION HISTORY AND SITE SELECTION In 1998, the hospital began pre-construction phases and planned the expansion as an add-on at the hospital’s original site. However, changes in the economy prompted funding to shift to an entirely new facility at a yet undetermined location. In early 2003, the City of Austin approached Seton Healthcare Network about its redevelopment of the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport into a mixed-use urban village and to discuss the city’s need of a major tenant to establish viability for the project. The airport had relocated to a decommissioned Air Force base southeast of the city in mid-1999, leaving the former 700-acre site vacant. Both the city and Seton felt that this area provided the right location for the new hospital to serve the community and agreed that Seton’s commit- INCREASED SIZE AND CAPACITY Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas opened its doors on June 30, 2007, offering the country a look at a hospital that is groundbreaking not only in its design but also its commitment to the environment and the concept of sustainability. The newest member of the Seton Family of Hospitals, this facility, described as “high-tech, high-touch,” spans nearly one-half million square feet, three times as big as its predecessor, Children’s Hospital of Austin. That additional space supports increased capacity in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department, a comprehensive Pediatric Trauma program, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center and a host of other capabilities.
