Further embracing the principles of sustainable design, native and adaptive plants were employed throughout the healing garden coupled with an underground drip irrigation to minimize maintenance and lessen the impact on the municipal water supply. Additional design elements throughout the healing garden include water features, sculptures, an orchard and a function lawn. Windows throughout the hospital open to six courtyards that illuminate the hospital’s interior, reducing daytime lighting and energy consumption. The accompanying therapeutic views of nature couple with multi-sensory stimuli in the healing garden and interior courtyards to foster recovery. The hospital’s courtyard environments reflect the biodiversity of Central Texas incorporating plant species that represent the six ecoregions within the 46 counties the hospital serves.
