EDITOR’S NOTE ™ HIGH HOPES AT HIGHER ED CAMPUSES By now, many of you have a green college or university in your portfolio. With initiatives like the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (www.presidents climatecommitment.org), more higher ed institutions are going green, big and small. We even had to add the new Educational category to our Excellence in Design Awards program due to the sheer volume of school entries. The winner of this new category, the LEED Platinum Sculpture Building and Parking Structure at Yale University, is but one. This issue is filled with similarly inspiring examples of green institutional buildings. From dormitories and student housing, to classrooms, auditoriums and labs, colleges have found more ways to renovate or build new green buildings. Even entire campuses are making the commitment. Beyond the built environment, colleges and universities are a great place to put sustainable initiatives into practice. To reduce tons of paper, my alma mater, Michigan State University, has started using the services of electronic transcript firm ConnectEdu, a streamlined paperless admissions system (www.connectedu.net). Officials and educators can, and need, to find ways to incorporate sustainable practices through an action plan. Start by showcasing the benefits of green design to students. Don’t hide your sustainable building strategies — celebrate them. Encourage students by supporting their participation in competitions, such as the Solar Decathlon or the Hydrogen Student Design Contest. Even architects can help familiarize the student body with the USGBC’s Emerging Green Builders or help start a local chapter. And go further by incorporating these principles into a student’s formal education. Sustainability can enhance the curriculum in several disciplines, including design, construction, engineering and communications, just to name a few. The time is now to prepare future generations for the climate change challenges they will face as they enter the real world. Look to schools that already offer green programs. For the upcoming school year, the Master of Real Estate Development program at Arizona State University requires every student to take the LEED Accredited Professional exam. Please address on-campus transportation. When I was a freshman, my “green” transportation mode of choice was a bike or my feet. Although no cars on campus is the greenest choice, it is not always feasible. So, find ways to be a little less impactful on the Earth.
