Each of the participating universities is conducting LED lighting pilots to determine the cost and environmental benefits of switching to LED lighting in campus applications. SOLAR INSTALLATION PART OF UNIVERSITY’S COMMITMENT TO CLEAN ENERGY SOURCES Pueblo, Colo. — Colorado State UniversityPueblo is adding solar electric system in excess of one megawatt, one of the largest such systems for an education facility in the United States. Under this arrangement with Black Hills Energy (formerly Aquila) and BP Solar, the system is estimated to contribute more than 10 percent of the university’s electricity needs. Installation of the groundbased solar array began in July with full operation scheduled for late this fall. The university will purchase the electricity generated by the solar array from BP Solar, who will install and operate the system. Black Hills Energy will purchase the solar on-site renewable energy credits generated from the system from BP Solar. The system will be constructed on the east side of campus between the physical plant complex and the softball fields on a strip of land that could not easily serve any other purpose. Designed by architecture firm Lord, Aeck & Sargent, the 60-bed residence hall will feature a variety of sustainable design strategies. The building is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council and is targeted for LEED Silver certification. The four-story, 34,000square-foot structure should be completed by spring 2009. The new residence hall is expected to use approximately 50 percent less energy use than a conventionally constructed facility. To improve energy efficiency, lighting strategies will include motion sensor switching, energy-efficient lamps and generous amounts of daylighting. Other strategies for reducing energy use include an exterior building envelope with above average insulation values, energyefficient windows, and a geothermal mechanical system that will provide low operating costs and a long life cycle. Water efficiencies include rainwater collection for landscape irrigation, and water saving plumbing fixtures. Indoor air quality will be protected through the use of low-VOC adhesives and coatings. Recycled and regional construction materials will be used, and construction waste will be recycled www.skylightinfo.com www.kalwall.com ICC-ES Listed PFC 1705 SEPTEMBER 2008 Chris Cunningham Photography ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN + CONSTRUCTION Healthy.
