USM’s new residence hall challenges students to be energy conscious. Photos by BlindDog Photography. N ote from the editor: Throughout the nation, college and university campuses are taking the lead by designing sustainable campuses and curriculums. The number of these programs and building projects continues to grow and it would be impossible to cover them all. In this issue, ED+C offers a snapshot of a few notable examples ranging from residence halls to classroom facilities, and additional details are available online at www.EDCmag.com. TRANSFORMATIVE IMAGE: USM’S GORHAM CAMPUS Throughout the last decade, the University of Southern Maine in Gorham has sought to transform the campus’s image by emphasizing design and sustainability. A new 296-bed residence hall, opened for the Fall 2007 semester, is the latest in a line of green-focused buildings. Designed and engineered by Auburn-based Harriman Associates, this LEED-registered building is seeking at least a Silver certification, and it also challenges students to be energy conscious. Monitors in the lobby will display energy usage by floor and wing, and students will vie for the most energy-efficient floor. Recycling systems in all apartments and suites will reinforce a sustainability ethic. The project includes a variety of green and sustainable features, such as a highly reflective flat roof, a landscape design that uses drought-tolerant plant species, “no-mow” grass and energy-efficient plumbing fixtures. Several measures were incorporated into this project to optimize energy performance, such as hydronic variable flow, variable air volume fan control, ventilation controls for occupancy and automatic lighting shutoff. The building is predicted to use 25 percent less energy than the minimum standard as outlined in ASHRAE 90.1. Ninety-seven percent of the total of the reused building components and actual recycled waste materials was diverted from landfill disposal. More than 50 percent of the wood products used are from FSC-certified forests, 10 percent of building materials are recycled content, and 20 percent of building materials and products were manufactured locally. And each residence room will have recycling bins. Material is then sent to a central campus recycling facility. WWW.EDCMAG.COM The building was designed with zero use of CFC-based refrigerants, and it was sited near the campus/intercampus bus line to reduce automobile use. Finally, 50 percent of the energy consumed by the building is from renewable sources.
