Environmental Design + Construction - September 2008 - (Page 36) SNAPSHOTS might not have been successful or been right for the project. Because of that mindset, many of the green elements fell into place and became a natural fit for the building and the environment. The design and building team learned early on that there had to be a balance of design, function and sustainability since the building is tucked into a wooded area within DePauw’s 520-acre Nature Park. While it’s a beautiful setting, it’s one that also caused challenges. Learn about the sustainable design strategies employed on this project only at www.EDCmag.com. Author Chuck Scholer, group manager for contractor Shiel Sexton, addresses energy savings, material selection and the gains the university has made through its commitments to sustainable design. DEPAUW UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS HAVE SEEN A SHIFT IN STUDENTS’ INTEREST IN GREEN DESIGN. INCOMING STUDENTS ARE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS AND EXPECT HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS TO BE ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS. FIVE YEARS AGO, PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS WOULD VISIT CAMPUS AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT ACADEMICS, FACULTY AND ATHLETICS. TODAY, ABOUT 25 PERCENT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE SCHOOL’S SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PROGRAMS. THAT INTEREST AMONG ITS STUDENTS AND ALUMNI ARE HELPING SPURRING GREEN DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS ON CAMPUSES NATIONWIDE. — CHUCK SCHOLER, GROUP MANAGER FOR CONTRACTOR SHIEL SEXTON AND AUTHOR OF “GIVING A BOOST: DEPAUW UNIVERSITY’S INSTITUTE OF ETHICS,” AVAILABLE AT WWW.EDCMAG.COM. ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE: DELAWARE COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S STEM COMPLEX The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Complex at Delaware County Community College (DCCC) includes a technology building designed to house facilities for the vocational trades, including carpentry, HVAC/plumbing, electronics and auto labs. The $59 million project, scheduled to be completed in December 2009, anticipates a LEED Silver certification. A science facility will include chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, computer and CAD labs, general classrooms and a lecture hall, in addition to a fitness center. Situated adjacent to the existing academic building, the complex will provide a new gateway to the college and create a student-friendly courtyard. Extensive early energy modeling drove many of the architectural decision-making as the building was designed in direct response to environmental conditions and performance requirements. The 100,000-square-foot science, engineering and math building and 32,000square-foot technology building hopes to DCCC used energy modeling to aid in the design of the new STEM complex encourages non-science students and the Delaware County Community at-large to enter and utilize the facility. Notable sustainable design elements include a green roof, energy-efficient systems, recycled materials, daylight harvesting, and a partial vegetated roof to reduce stormwater run-off. The remaining roof is a white membrane that reduces heat gain into the building. Paints, carpets and adhesives were specified to be low-emitting, and ceiling panels and gypsum wall board are made from recycled content. Structural steel is 100 percent recycled content and the cast-in-place concrete has high fly ash content (recycled waste material). The Science Center is four stories, with a metal panel screened mechanical area at the fourth floor level. There are wetlands north of the building and a stream at the western edge of the building.
