GREEN BUILDING RESEARCH GRANTS ANNOUNCED Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced the recipients of its 2008 Green Building Research Fund grants. The Green Building Research Fund was created to spur research that will advance sustainable building practices and encourage market transformation. The USGBC committed $2 million to the program, while the Research Fund is generating $1,150,825 in matching funds and leveraging additional activities and partnerships. According to the USGBC, the selected proposals excelled due to the quality of topic, methodology and expected impact. Research topics covered each of the five categories of environmental performance that are addressed within the LEED green building certification system. The goal is to leverage the results of the survey to help companies identify their “best bets” for energy efficiency — which strategies worked well, which didn’t, and why. The survey is open to those who own or manage their facilities, focusing on commercial, industrial, government, academic, medical, and other types of non-residential facilities. To ensure meaningful data, it will apply only to those facilities that have been occupied prior to January 1, 2007. Each participating organization will invite its members to participate in the survey, in an effort to attract the largest number of responses for this important topic. PROJECT RECEIVES LEED ND PLATINUM San Francisco — TMG Partners has received the first national Platinum certification under the LEED ND (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Neighborhood Development) pilot program. The certification went to the Emeryville Marketplace Redevelopment Project, a TMG development in association with Heller Manus Architects and landscape designers David Gates & Associates. Originally a trucking terminal and brown field site, the 14-acre Emeryville Marketplace had its existing buildings remodeled with an eye on sustainability, including certifying the food court as a green business, composting and recycling on-site waste, and diverting restaurant grease to biodiesel.
