The interior doors are compressed wheat with cherry veneer, the stair treads are bamboo, and the built-ins were constructed with Medite, which help create two separately insulated living zones that will be used differently as the family grows. Today, both floors are occupied. But, as the children grow and move out, the second floor can be closed off and not conditioned. From the very start, the architect began a process of education and training that quickly brought multiple contractors, suppliers, and local officials into the mainstream of sustainable industry. Several green and healthy products used in the home now have local suppliers, further promoting these new alternatives. The architect has worked closely with the builder and homeowner to showcase this house and promote sustainable residential construction. It was featured in several solar and green home tours as a shining example of how healthy, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient homes can be attractive, low maintenance and comfortable. Local blue stone was used for the site retaining walls and building wainscot. The concrete foundation was diamond ground and polished to create a finished floor in all common spaces. Concrete countertops contain 44 percent recycled glass, and local eucalyptus was used for hardwood floors. Interior air quality was achieved by using no-VOC and low-VOC interior paints and stains, no added urea-formaldehyde glues in cabinets, a Merv-16 air filtering system, mechanical exhaust systems and natural ventilation.
