NOTE Get your game face on! It’s time for Greenbuild, the green building event of the year. The show, in Boston this month, is the place to see and be seen, so get your game face on. For the sixth year, I’m looking forward to some exciting new ideas and products at Greenbuild. Last month, we gave you a sampling of the products you’ll find at the expo, and this month we bring you even more on page 144 and in the Green Product Buzz Guide (page 131). With more than 1,400 exhibitors and numerous educational sessions, it’s sure to be an event that will help you succeed. Visit ED+C and Sustainable Facility magazines at booth #1833. the people you’re marketing to. In the green sector, save paper and don’t overdo your printed promos and postcards. A failure to do so could just prove to others that you’re not serious. 3 Along those lines, be passionate. Don’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk. If you do your homework, you will see how important green building is and what it means for the future, personally and professionally. If your clients feel your enthusiasm, opportunities will grow. Don’t be afraid to take it a step further. Try to incorporate more sustainable practices into your lifestyle. 4 Reach out to your community. Get involved. Join a local green building chapter or committee, or start one in your neighborhood or in your company. Share the reasons that you are passionate about sustainability with schools and community leaders. If you have additional suggestions for surviving and thriving in tough times, please share them with me. EDITOR’S Surviving and Thriving It’s a tough time economically for many professionals, especially for those in the building, design and construction community. Beyond attending events like Greenbuild for knowledge and networking, there are plenty of other things you can do to stand out and succeed. Here are a few things I’ve learned about being successful in green building (which may apply to other industries as well) that I hope you can appreciate: 1 Do your homework. Know what you’re talking about (for example, it’s “LEED,” not “LEEDS”), research products thoroughly, and understand the various processes applied in greener buildings (such as certification systems for products and buildings). Build a solid case for green building through concrete examples of costs and ROIs. 2 Market yourself and your company. Find ways to stand out by promoting your services and sharing your successes. Use the Internet to network (for example, ED+C has a page on Facebook.com) and utilize the media. But, and this is key, know New Look Do you notice anything different about this issue of ED+C?
