NEWSLINE FSC-US Announces Winner of Designing & Building with FSC Award MINNEAPOLIS — The Forest Stewardship Council-US (FSC-US) announced that Green Hammer, Inc., based in Portland, Ore., will receive the fourth annual Designing & Building with FSC Award for its single-family custom-built house. The award recognizes building projects that have furthered responsible forest management through their use of FSC-certified wood products. Completed in July 2008, Green Hammer, Inc.’s custom-built house is a 2,600-square-foot single-family custom home with a 600-square-foot additional dwelling unit studio apartment. This project is pending LEED Platinum status and is located in the Portland, Ore., region. The house is built of entirely FSC-certified wood, which was locally harvested, with the exception of the trim (salvaged bleacher seats from a local high school) and stair treads (salvaged from a tree removed on-site). The project highlights the quality and diversity of FSC-certified products available in the marketplace. Products range from framing lumber to countertops; species range from traditional Douglas fir to lesserknown Madrone; and no wood was wasted, with knotty and lower-grade material serving as unique accents in the design and construction. The open design plan makes these attributes easily visible. Diana Brown, group publisher of Environmental Design & Construction magazine and part of the selection committee for the award, stated, “The Designing and Building with FSC award had very strong competition this year! The 100 percent use of FSC-certified wood — including Pure, reclaimed and logs from the site itself — as well as the continued growth and education about FSC in the industry were exemplified in this year’s winning project, Green Hammer. EPA Announces Winners of the Second Annual Green Building Design Competition ATLANTA, GA. — The U.S. EPA recognized the winners of the second annual Lifecycle Building Challenge 2 (LBC2) competition. EPA acknowledges award winners for their innovative green building ideas that will help to reduce environmental and energy impacts of buildings and assist the building industry in the reuse of more than 100 million tons of building-related construction and demolition debris sent each year to landfills in the United States. EPA, along with its partners, the Building Materials Reuse Association, the American Institute of Architects, Southface Energy Institute, West Coast Green, and StopWaste.Org, invited professionals and students nationwide to submit designs and ideas that support costeffective disassembly and anticipate future use of building materials. The response to the challenge has led the partners to launch the competition for a third year in the fall of 2008 through 2009. The competition, open to architects, reuse experts, engineers, designers, planners, contractors, builders, educators, environmental advocates and students, includes the following categories: ■ Building — an entire building from foundation to roof ■ Innovation — a component, tool, policy, part of a building, a strategy, or educational tool ■ Outstanding Achievement Awards — best greenhouse gas reduction design, best school design and best residential design Visit www.lifecyclebuilding.org and www.epa.gov/ region4/p2 for information on the winners, to view images and learn more about the competition. New ASTM Standards Initiative to Support Goals of Global Sustainability W. CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. — ASTM International, one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world, announced the formation of ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability. This new standards development initiative results from the cooperative efforts of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and cross industry stakeholders who share mutual goals for global sustainable development. Newly formed ASTM International Committee E60 aims to be the forum where diverse stakeholders come together to create the consensus standards that will promote and integrate sustainable development across multiple industry sectors. Dr. Mary C. McKiel, U.S. EPA Standards Executive, commented, “ASTM’s proven ability to produce globally-used consensus based standards in environmental and sustainability areas make it well-suited to support the goals of this new standards writing activity and the open process needed to ensure its utility.” E60 will also support and serve as a resource for other ASTM committees in their activities that include sustainability issues.
