Colorado Recreation Center Seeks LEED Platinum ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILL. — The Town of Carbondale Recreation & Community Center hums with activity while waiting for the official response to its application for Platinum LEED certification. The Carbondale center is seeking certification of the highest level because of its energy saving features and close-to-zero carbon footprint. Opened in March 2008, the main feature of the 14,500-square-foot building is the 8,000-square-foot multi-use gym and performance center, which doubles as the largest indoor space in Carbondale. The Taraflex Sport Performance Plus flooring chosen for the gym contributed LEED credits via low-VOC (volatile organic compound) levels, recycled content and low water and energy use requirements. Other facility amenities include a weight and exercise room, climbing wall, onsite child care area, kitchen and showers. For more information, visit www.gerflortaraflex.com. DOE Develops Benchmark Models WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Energy (DOE), in conjunction with three of its national laboratories, has developed and made available commercial building benchmark models for building professionals to use when analyzing whole-building energy performance across the commercial building stock. The commercial benchmarks are available for DOE’s EnergyPlus simulation software. DOE’s Building Technologies Program, working with DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and National Renewable Energy Laboratory, developed models for 16 commercial building types in 16 locations representing all U.S. climate zones. Users can download the benchmarks by building type or location at the Commercial Building Benchmark Models’ Web page. Carver YMCA Earns LEED Certiﬁcation ATLANTA — LEED certification has been awarded to the Villages at Carver Family YMCA in Atlanta, a landmark community project for which Hardin Construction Company served as general contractor. Completed in 2007, Villages at Carver Family YMCA is an eight-acre sports, fitness and learning complex located within Villages at Carver, a mixed-use community near the Atlanta Braves’ Turner Field. The YMCA complex provides new sports and recreational opportunities for some 500 children and is a component of the community’s revitalization efforts.
