Environmental Design + Construction - January 2009 - (Page 23) HOWTO combat global warming, reduce the and production of greenhouse gases, stronger infrastructure. SPECIFY FLY ASH (a recovered resource) builda as a replacement for cement in concrete. When you specify fly ash as replacement for cement in concrete, you help reduce CO2 emissions from cement production, conserve landfill space, and decrease water usage. You also enhance workability and chemical attack resistance, increase strength and produce more durable concrete. Contact Headwaters Resources for free technical literature and information on how fly ash use benefits the environment and produces better concrete. PHOTO BY JOSEPH H. MAYTON III, EDITOR OF SUSTAINABLE FACILITY. live from the show, announcing some of the hot new products on the show floor. Check out www.EDCmag.com for plenty of coverage and more photos. Some of the big news announced at the show included LEED 2009 passing member ballot and changes in LEED AP credentialing; the 2008 Leadership Awards honored some extraordinary green leaders. The firstever Green Homebuilders’ Day also proved to be a huge success. And of course, everyone’s calendar was filled with parties, parties and more parties. ED+C and Sustainable Facility hosted an event on opening night to an enthusiastic crowd of readers, writers, advertisers and supporters. We also teamed up with GREENGUARD for the organization’s annual pub night again (see below). Greenbuild 2008 was an unforgettable event. I hope to see you next November in Phoenix at Greenbuild 2009. GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has been participating in the Greenbuild Expo since it started in 2002. In 2004, GEI decided to host an event during the Greenbuild Show — Pub Night. Each year since then, GEI has found the best Irish Pub in the city, and this year was no exception. GEI’s 5th Annual Pub Night was a huge success with more than 600 attendees and 19 sponsors socializing and showing off their dance moves at Ned Devines and Parris in Historic Faneuil Hall. Pub Night gives GEI the opportunity to show participating manufacturers, potential customers and partners a small token of appreciation. This event is also an ideal venue for networking and learning more about GEI and the GREENGUARD Certification Program. This year’s sponsors included CertainTeed Corporation, Draper, Dulux Lifemaster, ED+C magazine, Georgia Pacific Gypsum, LLC, Global Contract, Inc., Guardian Fiberglass, Herman Miller, Knauf Insulation, Laticrete International, Maxxon, Omnova Solutions, Phifer, Inc., Sherwin Williams, Sustainable Facility magazine, Teknion, Virco, VT Industries, Wilsonart. A special thank you to those who donated items for the door prizes: Guardian Fiberglass, Herman Miller, Knauf Insulation, Owens-Corning, Teknion and Virco. Founded in 2001, GEI is an industry-independent, non-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program. The institute’s mission is to protect human health and quality of life through programs that improve the indoor air people breathe. As an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for building materials, interior products, electronic equipment, indoor environments and buildings. The more than 200,000 GREENGUARD Certified products must meet stringent, third-party standards for low chemical emissions based on established health standards, and undergo rigorous testing and verification processes on a regular basis. An online guide of GREENGUARD Certified products is available at no charge at www.greenguard.org. LEED the way in reducing your client’s carbon foot print! High energy costs siphon off profits even quicker than you earn them. To reduce energy loss through open doorways and improve your energy savings plan, include a Mars Brand Air Door.
