Panoramic views and state-of-the-art technology are what visitors find at this 32,000-square-foot facility. The design of the library is based on a cathedral spine that divides the building into three main sections including a large community room where a massive, 40-foot stone fireplace creates a beautiful focal point. To complement and balance the extensive use of glass throughout the project, more than 10,000 square-feet of Eldorado Stone’s Manzanita Cliffstone profile was used. “We originally considered natural stone, but we liked the look we achieved with Eldorado,” says Bill McAteer, construction manager for the city. “It blended beautifully with the hillside and gave us exactly the look we wanted.” Architect Craig Whitridge of LPA, Inc., the architectural firm that designed the project, adds, “Our goal in using Eldorado was to find a stone that could replicate what is found natu- rally in the area, but in an economical fashion that could be used today.” Providing architects and designers more creative tools to work with is part of Eldorado’s commitment to developing groundbreaking products and offering more sustainable solutions for its customers. Today, the company offers eco-friendly manufacturing processes that include the use of recyclable contents into its stone products. “Depending on the manufacturing plant and mix design specified, our stone can incorporate both pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content that helps architects and designers earn LEED points for their projects,” says Brent Spann, VP of Marketing for Eldorado Stone. At half the weight of natural stone, shipping weight and installation costs are reduced, making for a more user friendly product. “We have five manufacturing plants strategically located across the United States,” says Spann. “That means that 78 percent of the U.S. population is within 500 miles of an Eldorado Stone plant and allows us to meet one of the most important LEED requirements. We’re also committed to sourcing local raw materials to construct our products,” he adds. “We’re honored that our stone was selected for this prestigious library project,” says Spann.
