SPOTLIGHT NORTHEAST SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION Building Your Practice with Help from Professionals. BUILT IN THE LATE 1940s, PETER COOPER VILLAGE/STUYVESANT TOWN, MANHATTAN, N.Y. HAS 11,000 UNITS AND IS MORE EFFICIENT THAN SOME LEED BUILDINGS. As we design and construct new buildings to higher standards, practitioners begin to find that many of the most important details in new construction are tried and true “old standards”: work together as a team, exceed code provisions, build tight, ventilate right, size the HVAC to the load, use water efficiently, shut off things when you’re not using them, provide efficient lighting and appliances, use safer and sustainable materials, and orient the building intelligently. Follow these steps and, particularly in urban areas, you’re more than half way to your ENERGY STAR, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design through the U.S. Green Building Council), or whatever local or regional building standard you are looking to meet or exceed. This is a winning formula in new construction, but as many point out, today’s buildings will comprise over 90 percent of the buildings 40 years from now. As important as high-performance new construction is for the building community, rehabilitation and retrofit of existing buildings is incredibly more important to reduce our carbon footprint. Building professionals from across the Northeast, and many other places, have been learning and reciting these practices for more than 30 years at the premier high-performance building conference, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) Building Energy (BE) Conference and Trade Show, to be held this year in Boston, March 10-12, 2009. BE09 promises another top-notch lineup of experienced building professionals discussing new construction, rehab and retrofit of residential, commercial, institutional, and multi-family buildings. Speakers and lineups are posted on its website, www.buildingenergy.nesea.org. As practitioners in the high-performance building industry, Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) relies on BE09 as a platform to discuss successes and challenges in the industry, to learn from our fellow building professionals, and most importantly, to meet, greet, and hire the best and brightest to work for our 36-year old firm. SWA has found its best employees through BE, and we decided five years ago to sponsor a booth to highlight our work and talk to potential employees. This year, SWA staff will be talking about ventilation in multi-family buildings, catastrophic waste in multi-family buildings, and resource-efficient buildings. They’re even letting our President Steven Winter, and a few others, talk about how high-performance design busi- nesses survive through the trials and tribulations of the stock market, increasing fuel prices, and government intervention. The technical sessions at BE09 will be among the best in the nation helping building professionals learn everything from the basics to new technologies in this quickly expanding field. In the last few years, I’ve really enjoyed the exhibitor’s floor, because of the many new and interesting products and services, and because it’s a great place to catch up with all the old friends that we’ve worked with for years.
