Located as a pivotal part of the entryway to the town of Snowmass Village, the site of a new recreation center is connected to the town’s system of parks and trails, forming a significant part of the “gateway” to the town core. Commanding views of the Snowmass ski area provide for excellent solar exposure and orientation for the 8,169square-foot project, completed in the spring of 2007. The design team of the Snowmass Village Recreation Center intended to provide a unique fitness and recreation center through a strong connection to historic building form with a timeless and modern interpretation, and one that also meets LEED requirements (though that has not yet been pursued). A long gable serves as a connective passive solar gallery and central core; exposed glulam and recycled timber elements, recycled barnwood, cement board siding, and resin panels were specified; and exposed ductwork, conduit and pipe reveal the inner workings of the building. A full solar hot-water array provides heat for both pools and domestic water use (the pools serve as a geothermal storage for heating and cooling). In addition, walls and roofs are constructed from structural insulated panels (SIPs), and, inside, careful attention was paid to non-toxic recycled sources, efficient construction practices and indoor air quality. Carefully placed efficient lighting highlights artistry throughout the project. Finally, a “truth window” showcases mechanical equipment to engage the public. The distinct architectural forms and materials of the innovation and sustainable recreation center have become an icon for the town of Snowmass Village.
